When you read the words to this Christmas hymn, you realize that Israel was longing for a Saviour. The birth of Messiah was more than just a holiday, it was the birth of hope. They longed to be delivered from exile, Satan's tyranny, dark shadows, misery, and the grave. But the last two lines tell it all -- Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. Have any of us ever longed for Jesus in our lives to this depth?
